What We Do
Building Capacity
Project Word helps ethnically diverse writers—and stories about marginalized communities, especially indigenous communities—become published in a range of media. Relying on professional personnel, we provide selected writers with whatever they need to become published: help strengthening proposals, introductions to editors, and coaching as necessary to meet the needs of editors once an article is commissioned. In limited cases we support story development.
Funded by individual donors and foundations, Project Word serves writers and editors gratis. Where possible, we provide writers with stipends to cover proposal expenses—or provide referrals for additional support from sources like the George Washington Williams minority journalism scholarship. Support for expenses depends on the story proposed and cannot be guaranteed.
We deal mostly in long-form narrative journalism but will consider other forms of writing that meet our writers' guidelines.
